Classification Westheide (1971) originally placed Apharyngtus in the Dinophilidae. Much later Westheide (2008: 5) states "A detailed molecular. anatomical and phylogenetic analysis is in preparation but preliminary results place the species [Apharyngtus punicus] far away from the Dinophilidae". Ten years later Kerbl et al (2018: 5) cite Westheide (2008) for their statement that the "monotypic genus Apharyngtus Westheide, 1971 has an uncertain phylogenetic relationship to Dinophilidae. Later there is a separate section on Apharyngtus authored by Westheide (2019) in chapter 7 of the first annelid volume in the current edition of Handbook of Zoology [ https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110291582-007/html]. Westheide in the Handbook of Zoology Dinophilidae chapter states that "The erection of a new family taxon Apharyngtidae thus seems to be necessary." Then Worsaae et al. (2021) create family Apharyngtidae. The family is still monotypic for the single species known. [details]
