New combination Mesnil (1896:174) places Spio mecznikowianus in his new genus Microspio, but the new combination name is not included as part of the text. Mesnil states "Je crée ce genre pour deux espèces très intéressantes : Spio Mecznikowianus Clpde (1) et Spio atlanticus Lnghs (2)." He also states "Spio Mecnikowianus n'étant pas suffisamment connu", therefore it is ironic that name was subsequently designated as the type species of the genus by Söderström (1920: 248) [details]

Spelling Claparède, 1869, originally should have used 'mecznikowiana' for agreement with the feminine genus Spio, as the construction is a proper noun personal name converted to an adjective ('of Mecznikow') by the addition of the suffix 'ianus, iana, ianum'. Foster (1971) is one of the first to change the ending to 'mecznikowiana' when combined in Microspio. [details]
