Etymology From Blake (2023: 287): "The epithet is from the Greek, bathys for deep." However it is unclear how the spelling became Latinized as 'bathyala' or what gender is intended (Oligobregma is neuter). Brown (1954) does not mention an -ala suffix. Perhaps a neologism. Perhaps treat as a noun in apposition. The Code is accepting of arbitrary combinations of letters for names provided they can be used as a word (Article 11.3). There are three usages of 'bathyala' in WoRMS, all created by Blake. [details]
Grammatical gender Blake & Read (2025: 448) treated 'bathyala' as a neologism, rather than a Latinized adjective as the suffix derivation wasn't clear. Thus 'bathyala' under article 31.2.3 is not a Latin word and is indeclinable for gender agreement.. [details]
