Authority Grube (1856: 44) gives the authority for Hermenia as "Gr. Örd. nov.gen." However, Grube's article title explains that the specimens were [here in translation] "collected by A.S. Örsted during a journey through the West Indies and Central America undertaken in the years 1845-1848, with the addition of some species collected by H. Kröyer during a journey to South America". Thus Grube was acknowledging the respective collectors, perhaps as a way of distinguishing between the two collectors. There is no evidence from the presentation that A.S. Örsted or Kröyer contributed text and thus Grube is here regarded as the sole author of Hermenia and the other taxa in his article. A.S. Örsted was primarily a botanist and contributed no works on Annelida subsequent to 1845 (the start year of his South American journey on which the polychaetes were collected), but instead published many works on the flora he collected in S. America during that period. However, Salazar-Silva & Salazar-Vallejo (2025) prefer to present the Hermenia authorship as Grube & Örsted in Grube, 1856. The Salazars cite their synonymies as if they follow prior authors who have used the Grube & Örsted authorship, but this is not correct. For example the 1959 Hartman catalogue attributes the authorship solely to Grube, as does the review of Pettibone,1975. The issue of a simple or double authorship has been discussed with Sergio Salazar prior to the publication of the current article. Nomenclature experts consulted by G Read also had the opinion that Grube was the sole author according to the Code 4th edition. [G Read, January 2026] [details]
