Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet oculata is a Latin adjective meaning 'having eyes', as refers presumably to the shape of the eyes of the species, unique according to Ehlers (1887: 148, 149): "oculis 4, anticis magnis convexis, posticis minutissimis; [...] abweichend dagegen ist die Augenbildung insofern als die vorderen an den Vorderecken des Kopflappens stehend gross sind und eine convex gewölbte, fast Cornea-ähnlich erscheinende Oberfläche besitzen, während die unmittelbar dahinter stehenden nur schwer erkennbare punktförmige dunkle Pigmentflecke sind" ["4 eyes, anterior big and convex, posterior minute; (...) on the other hand, the eye formation is different (from Syllis) in that the anterior ones are large and located at the anterior corners of the head-lobe, and have a convexly curved, almost cornea-like surface, while ones pair immediately behind them are hardly recognizable punctate dark spots of pigment"].
