Etymology It is not certain what Laubier meant in his footnote on the first page commenting on the name 'chamaeleon' but he notes the variable colour of the syllid, and that its octocoral home also was variable in colour patterns, with the implication the syllid colour matched the octocoral. He wrote: "Les raisons qui ont poussé von Koch à donner à sa nouvelle forme de Muricea le nom de chamaeleon (coloration jaune et rouge sur le même pied) sont aussi celles qui m'ont guidé; et cette homonymie souligne l'ectoparasitisme du Syllidien sur la Gorgone." [The reasons that led von Koch to name his new form of Muricea chamaeleon (yellow and red coloration on the same plant) are also those that guided me; and this homonymy underlines the ectoparasitism of the Syllid on the Gorgon.] Note that Muricea chamaeleon is currently a junior synonym of Paramuricea clavata. Type locality Epizoic on Muricea chamaeleon, now a junior synonym of Paramuricea clavata (Risso, 1827), collected from Bay of Banyuls 15 m and Cape Creus 40-60 m, geolocations not stated but Bay of Banyuls is approx 42.483 N, 3.131 E, and according to Martin et al (2002) Cape Creus is on the Catalonian coast ranging between 42 14' - 42 22' N and 3 12' - 3 22' W.
