Taxonomy Discussion from Böggemann (2005: 170: "The genus Ophioglycera was established by Verrill (1885) for the single species O. gigantea, which was described as having no prostomial appendages. According to Hartman (1950), the appendages are present, as previously suggested by Arwidsson (1899), but since chevrons are totally lacking the genus was still valid. [However] most of the described Ophioglycera are larger specimens, which had lost their chevrons during growth; in smaller specimens they are still present and therefore the type species of the genus is referred to Goniada. However, in Ophioglycera lyra Granados-Barba & Solı´s- Weiss, 1997, which remains the last species in this group, even juvenile specimens completely lack chevrons." Thus Böggemann created Ophiogoniada. It differs from the existing Goniadopsis which also lack chevrons in that all compound neurochaetae are spinigerous, with falcigerous compound neurochaetae absent (see Böggemann key, p.31) [details]
