Nomenclature Verrill (1900:647) proposed Stauronereis as replacement name for the junior homonym Staurocephalus, and for the alternative, Anisoceras Grube, 1856 which was also a junior homonym. However, Dorvillea Parfitt, 1866 is available and has priority. See type species note for further comment on whether Stauronereis was invalid as created. [details]
Type species Verrill, 1900 stated that Staurocephalus rudolphi, delle Chiaje, 1828 was designated the type species of his replacement genus name Stauronereis. This is not possible as replacement names automatically retain the same type species as the replaced name (ICZN Art 67.8), in this case Staurocephalus rubrovittatus Grube, 1855. Jumars (1974:103) stated that Stauronereis thus became invalid. However, this view is probably incorrect, although currently not important as the senior name Dorvillea has priority over Stauronereis. Verrill's act of creating a replacement nom. nov. for a junior homonym remains, and its validity should not be affected by his separate misstatement of what the type species was. [details]
