Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Schmarda (1861: 76): "Proboscis maxillis carens. Tentacula filiformia 4, nonnunquam etiam cirri tentaculares usque duodecim. Branchiae filiformes. Processus laterales monostichi aut distichi. Setae capillares et articulatae." [details]

Type designation The genus Cirrosyllis was established in Hesionidae by Schmarda (1861), to include six new species: Cirrosyllis ceylandica Schmarda, 1861 (from Sri Lanka), C. didymocera Schmarda, 1861 (Port Jackson, Australia), C. incerta Schmarda, 1861 (New Zealand), C. picta Schmarda, 1861 (Cape of Good Hope), C. tuberculata Schmarda, 1861 (Cape of Good Hope), and C. vittata Schmarda, 1861 (Croatia, Adriatic Sea). Schmarda did not designate a type species, and shortly after the genus was considered to be polyphyletic (e.g. Ehlers 1864, Quatrefages 1866, Augener 1918). With most of the types been lost (e.g. Pleijel 1998), its species have been scattered through different genera belonging to families Hesionidae, Syllidae, Dorvilleidae, and Nereididae, or stated to be indeterminable (Quatrefages 1866, Czerviavsky 1882, Ehlers 1904, Augener 1913, 1918, 1927, 1933, Fauvel 1939, Hartman 1959, Jumars 1974, Hutchings & Murray 1984, Pleijel 1998). Yet, Grube (1880: 222-223) did designate Cirrosyllis didymocera as the type species of the genus: “Cirrosyllis Schmarda. Jederseits 3 Paar Fühlercirren. Die Unterfühler sind einfache Fäden nach der Abbildung von C. didymocera Schmd. l. c. p. 77 Taf. XXVII Fig. 223, die ich als Typus dieser Gattung betrachte” [highlight by the Editor]. This subsequent type designation was overlooked since its establishment until its rediscovery and reinstatement by Aguado et al. (2019: 20). With Cirrosyllis didymocera having been combined in the genus Oxydromus Grube, 1855 by Villalobos-Guerrero & Harris (2012), as O. didymocerus (Schmarda, 1861), the genus Cirrosyllis becomes a junior synonym of Oxydromus, as noted by Aguado et al. (2019). For further details, please consult Aguado et al. (2019: 20). [details]
