Etymology The generic name Lycastoides is formed by the name of the genus Lycastis Savigny, 1822 followed by the Latin suffix -oides, meaning 'in the form of' or 'resembling', and seems to make reference to the similarity of the new genus with what was considered to be the genus Lycastis sensu Audouin & Milne-Edwards, 1833.  [details]

Nomenclature Alves et al (2018: 203) recombine Lycastoides type species (monotypic) L. alticola into Namanereis, thus the genus is made a junior synonym of Namanereis. However, this is not possible as Lycastoides is the senior genus. If the synonymy is soundly based then in order to preserve continued use of Namanereis the senior synonym Lycastoides, which threatens it, would need to be suppressed.  [details]

Diagnosis "Prostomium small, bilobed anteriorly, the lobes produced to form antennae; proboscis without paragnaths; no eyes; parapodia without ventral ligules or dorsal rami, tip retractile." (Johnson, 1903: 213).  [details]

[details]

Grammatical gender Masculine. A compound genus-group name ending in -oides is treated as masculine, whereas information from the species-group name of the type (alticola) is not helpful as it is treated as invariant compound noun in apposition due to the -cola ending (alticola, thus meaning high dwelling).

[details]

Type designation According to article 68.2.1. of the ICZN, "The expressions "gen. n., sp. n.", "new genus and species", or an equivalent, applied before 1931 to only one of two or more new nominal species originally included in a new nominal genus or subgenus, are deemed to be an original designation if no other type species was explicitly designated." This way, Lycastoides alticola Johnson, 1903 is the type of the genus Lycastoides by original designation. [details]
