Taxonomy Erected for an apparently unrelated group of (eventually) nine species, with type species unstated. All except two species were erected by Schmarda (1861), and all the seven original names were his. Four of the species names were for specimens Schmarda collected at Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. In Nereididae genus Mastigonereis is a name of uncertain application and validity, with no valid taxa. The Hartman catalogue refers the genus to Perinereis, but it is not clear why as she refers five of the names to Nereis, one to Perinereis, and two to Platynereis. The only Mastigonereis species combination not listed by Hartman is Mastigonereis operta (Stimpson, 1856) (now in Neanthes), an outdated combination created by Willey (1904) [details]
