Etymology Not stated. We may assume Mono- comes from Greek meaning single and -colea from Greek 'koleus' or Latin 'coleus' meaning sheath, thus single sheath referring to the supposed single anterior elytron. The more familiar Greek 'elytron' also mean sheath or shield, but perhaps would not work so well combined with mono. [details]

Taxonomy Costa uses the combination Monocolea tessellata for the first time in 1867 although he introduced genus and species (as Polynoe tessellata) in 1862. This resulted in the incorrect listing in the Hartman catalogue (1959: 94) as Monocolea tessellata Costa, 1867, as if a new species, although Hartman also has Polynoe tessellata Costa, 1862 on her page 106. Both are referred to Harmothoe lunulata of Delle Chiaje, 1830 (was Polynoe, now Malmgrenia) [details]

Synonymy Despite the apparent unique single first elytron of Polynoe tessellata, leading to the creation of genus Monocolea, Claparède (1868: 66 (alternate 376)) soon synonymized Polynoe tessellata Costa with Polynoe lunulata, saying Costa had made a mistake. See Monocolea tessellata for Costa's plate figure 1 of the anterior. [details]
