Etymology The etymology of Asclerocheilus heterochaetus is not stated, but it is perhaps so named because there are three types of chaetae. [details]
Homonymy According to Blake (2000: 135, footnote), as Oncoscolex (Eumenia) heterochaetus Augener, 1906 was a synonym of Kebuita glabra (Ehlers, 1887) and the later was referred to Asclerocheilus, the species Asclerocheilus heterochaetus Blake & Kudenov, 1978 became a junior secondary homonym of Oncoscolex heterochaetus Augener, 1906, (if it was in Asclerocheilus). For this reason the name was renamed by Blake (2000) as Asclerocheilus victoriensis. However, this is incorrect reasoning. Oncoscolex (Eumenia) heterochaetus Augener, 1906 has never been combined as an Asclerocheilus. This is known for certain as it was Blake (2000:135) that placed Kebuita as a synonym of Asclerocheilus, whereas O (E) heterochaetus had been disused from much earlier (Hartman, 1938) as a synonym of another species. Only if Oncoscolex (Eumenia) heterochaetus Augener, 1906 was revalidated as distinct (noting there is a synonymy chain of two names to be evaluated, not just one) and used as an Asclerocheilus would there be a situation of secondary homonymy with the species name of Kudenov & Blake (1978). Therefore Asclerocheilus victoriensis, the replacement name, is superfluous and is a junior objective synonym of the original Asclerocheilus heterochaetus [G Read, August 2024) [details]
