Synonymy Quatrefages (1866: 485) described (relatively fully) Lophiocephalus grandis, but evidently from the same two Paris museum specimens collected by Gaudichaud from Coquimbo, Chile, that Blanchard (1849) had earlier used to describe Siphostoma grande (now Trophoniella grandis). This unfortunate circumstance makes 'Lophiocephalus grandis' the objective junior synonym of Siphostoma grande. It is unclear if this was simply a genuine error, or an intentional unnecessary new name, but Quatrefages gives no indication that he knew the specimen was already named, and with the same epithet he used (obvious because of the large size). Salazar-Vallejo (2012: 488) comments on this, mentioning an unrelated occasion where Quatrefages apparently "introduced new names even when he was aware that a previous name had already been used for the same species".
