Etymology Not stated but evidently named Manayunkia polaris because of the high Arctic collection locality on the coast near Murmansk, although the latitude is only 69 degrees North. [details]
Status Needs work. Zenkewitsch (1935, in translation) wrote that "It is highly probable that the M. polaris we found and described is identical to M. aestuarina. However, it is impossible for us to consider this identity completely proven, since the necessary comparative material is unfortunately not available to us. In order to avoid any errors, we tentatively name our form a new species, M. polaris, but consider it more than likely that this form is merely a synonym of M. aestuarina. Unfortunately, none of the authors who mention M. aestuarina (Bourne, Horst, Romijn, McIntosh) provides a detailed description, so their explanations leave several significant uncertainties." Bick & Bastrop (2025) write that "Already Zenkevitsch (1935) himself and Hartman (1951) assumed a synonymy of M. polaris Zenkevitsch,1935 with M. aestuarina (Bourne, 1883)" [...and ] "The synonymisation of M. polaris with M. aestuarina assumed by Zenkevitsch (1935) and Hartman (1951) should also be critically reviewed." Hartman (1951: 389) actually listed M. polaris as valid, but commented that "This [species] appears to be near M . aestuarina (Bourne) ." Note the large geographic and climatic separation of the type localities (Arctic Ocean Russian coast versus England, Thames Estuary) [details]
