Etymology The species is named after Abel Tasman (b. Lutjegast, Dutch Republic, 1603 - d. Batavia, Dutch East Indies, 10 October 1659), ''who was among the first Europeans to explore the southern seas of Australia and to set foot on Tasmania" (Bakken, 2002: 331). [details]

Type locality Eastern Bass Strait, 100 km off North Point, Flinders Island, Tasmania, Australia (39°51.8'S, 148°26.5'E). Bakken (2002) gives the latitude of the holotype as being ''31°51.8'S'', but this is a typo, being the correct latitude ''39°51.8'S''. [details]
