Specimen Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, POLY TYPE 410, 411 [details]
Status Nereis ventilabrum has been treated as an original name created by Quatrefages, 1866. In Solis-Weiss et al types are listed for Nereis ventilabrum as MNHN POLY TYPE 410, 411. However Nereis ventilabrum is a recombination from Spio ventilabrum delle Chiaje, 1827. Quatrefages indicates he got the Nereis ventilabrum new combination name from prior usage by Audouin & Edwards 1833: 220 and Grube, 1850, but they only state that Spio ventilabrum is a nereidid without recombining it. Note that the figure of delle Chiaje (plate 27 figure 12, labelled Spio ventilabrum) is clearly showing a nereidid, so there is no doubt it was truly a nereidid. [details]
Synonymy Synonymised to Perinereis cultrifera (Grube, 1840) by Heinen (1911) and Regnard (1913) and possibly by others earlier, but delle Chiaje's original species name Spio ventilabrum cannot be a synonym of Perinereis cultrifera (Grube, 1840) as it is the senior name. However, if Quatrefages' 1866 usage in Nereis was a misidentification, then treated as a new entity 'sensu Quatrefages 1866' his usage of the name might be a synonym of P. cultrifera. Quatrefages' 'type' specimens need to be re-examined to determine their identity. [details]
