Editor's comment The species name originates from an apparent misidentification by Leidy (1855). Quatrefages (1866: 278) enigmatically created the name Sthenelais leidyi for a Sigalion mathildae identification by Leidy as occurring in New Jersey. There is no explanation but evidently Quatrefages regarded the specimen as misidentified by Leidy. Hartman (1942) presents Sthenelais leidyi Quatrefages (p.278) as if a replacement name for Sigalion mathildae Leidy, 1855 (with separating punctuation lacking) from the New Jersey coast, as quote "(new name for S. mathildae Leidy, not Audouin & M. Edwards)". She means to report it was Quatrefages' name for the USA occurrence record claimed by Leidy of the Audouin & Milne Edwards species S. mathildae from France. [details]
