Description Kröyer's description is as follows (2 lines of text):
Myxicola Sarsii Kr. Formå cylindrica. Color olivaceus, nullis maculis annulisve distinctus. Paria branchiarum XII. Longitudo totius animalis 1 1/2. [details]

Spelling Kröyer uses only the double i spelling for Myxicola sarsii, as he does for two other 'sarsii' names. There is no mention of a 'sarsi' contrary to the following assertion of Putignano et al (2023: 516) that "In the same work Kröyer (1856), reports both taxa, considering M. sarsii a synonym for M. infundibulum and M. sarsi a valid species, and this is also reported in WoRMS" [it is not]. "However, as already mentioned, a good description is present only for M. sarsii, whilst no description at all is available for M. sarsi.” This quote from Putignano et al. does not make sense. Putignano et al. (2023) have not understood that 'sarsi' is simply a subsequent misspelling of other authors. It is not present in Kröyer (1856). In addition, if there were a 'sarsi' Myxicola as well as a 'sarsii' the ICZN Code regards them as the same spelling so they would be homonyms. Later in the same work Putignano et al (2023:541) add that "In agreement with other authors (Capa & Murray 2015; Darbyshire 2019), we suggest the removal of M. sarsi from the list of valid Myxicola species and instead consider M sarsii as a probable good species." Again Putignano et al. are confused by what is simply a misspelling and not a separately named taxon. Also the two works cited do not have statements about the validity of M. sarsi/sarsii. The Darbyshire item is an abstract, and perhaps Putignano et al. have also seen a related unpublished MS, but this would not be open peer-reviewed literature and should instead be cited as a pers. comm.. [details]
