Taxonomy McIntosh's complete description at this time is: "Stomach of the cod. It is allied to H. zetlandica in regard to general appearance and processes. Scales fourteen to fifteen pairs, pale and semitranslucent; dorsal cirri scarcely extend beyond the bristles; serrations of the dorsal bristles continued to the tip; ventral bristles boldly bifid, and with rather broad tips." There is no indication this is a new species, but this very brief description predates a full description in 1876, and has sufficient information not to be a nomen nudum. M. macleodi was described (and figured) in further detail by McIntosh (1876, 382-383, plate LXIX figs. 2-3) where he uses 'n.s.' for new species.
