Authority  Sabella reniformis Leuckart, 1849 was named long after Amphitrite reniformis was named, but it is the same taxon as Bruguière's as it is based on the unnamed Amphitrite of Müller. Leuckart (1849) writes the name as "Sabella reniformis (Müll.) Mihi" although what he meant by 'mihi' (myself) in this context isn't clear. Perhaps he just meant the recombination into Sabella was his. He would have known a sabellid species named 'reniformis' had been reported upon for decades. Knight-Jones et al 2017: 204 appear to treat the name as a simple synonym, but it could also be regarded as a junior homonym or as a simple recombination of Bruguière's name. Nevertheless Sabella reniformis Leuckart is a name used in the BHL species list.
Müller, O. F. (1771) described "Die nieren-formige Amphitrite" (kidney-shaped Amphitrite) from Iceland, but did not give it a Latin name. The name Pseudopotamilla reniformis (Bruguière, 1789) comes from the original combination Amphitrite reniformis Bruguière, 1789: 57 in 'Encyclopedie Methodique'. Although the volume is dated 1792 the first part with Amphitrite is said to be published earlier in 1789 (various authors eg Evenhuis 2003, Sherborn, 1893). On this dating Bruguière predates the 13th Gmelin edition of Systema Naturae (1791: 3110).  [details]
