Taxonomy Created as a variety, Marphysa sanguinea var. americana, and later considered to be a junior synonym of Marphysa sanguinea (Montagu, 1913). Molina-Acevedo & Izwandy (2020: 5 of 48) raised its rank to species after examining the single original specimen, Holotype BNHM 1932.12.24.554-556 [details]
