Homonymy Pratt did not name this species. Contrary to the unstated implication of the listing in the Hartman catalogue p536, it is merely a biogeographically unlikely tentative record and not a junior homonym of B. mariae Lo Bianco, 1893. According to Knight-Jones & Perkins 1998, the specimens are probably lost. [details]

Editor's comment Strictly this record of Pratt's tentatively using an established prior name of Lo Bianco, does not qualify for inclusion as a taxon name in WoRMS. However, it is retained as it appears in the Hartman catalogue (1959: 536) as if a species named by Pratt [details]

[details]

Synonymy The Hartman catalogue (p.536) refers "mariae E. Pratt, 1901" to Bispira volutacornis. Hartman must have been aware Pratt was not erecting a new name as Pratt gives the identification as 'mariae' a question mark, stating "appears to be very like the Mediterranean B. mariae", and in her bipolar article stating "It is not certain that this form is identical with the Mediterranean form. New to Falkland Islands." Thus it is unknown why Hartman gave Pratt's usage a listing as if a new name. She also referred B. mariae Lo Bianco to B. volutacornis. [details]
