Taxonomy Hartmann-Schröder (1978) synonymised the species with Syllis crassicirrata (Treadwell, 1925) (as Typosyllis (Typosyllis) crassicirrata). This synonymy was followed by other authors, such as Licher (1999) and Bailey-Brock (1987). Álvarez-Campos et al. (2015) revised the holotype of Typosyllis (Typosyllis) magnapalpa, considered under the genus Syllis, and determined that the synonymy was not valid, since the chaetae is distinctly bidentate in S. crassicirrata, while in S. magnapalpa it is almost unidentate.
