Taxonomy Hooper (2002) treated this as a junior synonym of Higginsia, but the finding of a second species showing strong similarities with the type species, convinced us that Desmoxya is a distinct genus. In contrast to Higginsia, its affiliation is provisionally found to be with Poecilosclerida instead of the previously supposed Axinellida. The status as Poecilosclerida is based on molecular sequence data of Desmoxya pelagiae and is provsional as long as molecular data are lacking of the type species Desmoxya lunata. [details]
