Synonymy The variety incrustans of Isodictya simulans described by Carter (1887) from the Mergui Archipelago here transferred to Haliclona was not clearly described and is in fact unrecognizable. The number 71 mentioned by Carter (p. 69) as belonging to his variety incrustans was named as Haliclona carteri by Burton, 1959: 220 with a tantalizingly short description. Moreover, Burton's material (BMNH 1936.3.4.236a) does not appear to belong to the same species as Carter's nr. 71 (BMNH 1887.6.1.1). Nevertheless, as Burton made it apparent that Carter's nr. 71 is the intended type (although he did not mention the word 'type') Haliclona carteri is validly erected. Since Carter's var. incrustans, once transferred to Haliclona, is a junior homonym of Haliclona foraminosa var. incrustans (Czerniavsky, 1880) the name Haliclona carteri is probably a justified replacement name. [details]
