Authority Spongia flabelliformis Linnaeus, 1759 was unrecognizably described, but Pallas' (1766) subsequent description has been recognized as a Ianthella, Since then, the species Ianthella flabelliformis is considered as authored by Pallas. However, Pallas cited Linnaeus (1759) as one of the sources for his record. That means that Linnaeus' and Pallas' Spongia flabelliformis are the same species, and Linnaeus should be the author since his publication precedes that of Pallas.
