Nomenclature We cite here Van Soest et al.'s (202: 33) explanation for the nomen novum. Removal of homonymy between Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Thiele, 1898) and Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Burton, 1932). 1. Amorphilla halichondroides Thiele, 1898: 45 (type locality? Enoshima, Japan). Originally described as Amorphilla halichondroides Thiele, 1898 the genus Amorphilla is a junior synonym of Hymeniacidon on account of its type species, Hymenacidon sanguinea (Grant, 1826), being a junior synonym of the type species of Hymeniacidon, Hymeniacidon perlevis (Montagu, 1814) (type by subsequent designation) (Erpenbeck & Van Soest 2002: 809), and as such Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Thiele, 1898) became the senior secondary homonym of Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Burton, 1932) and Thiele's name is maintained (ICZN Art. 57.3). 2. Uritaia halichondroides Burton, 1932: 199 (type locality off South Sakhalin, Pacific Russia). Uritaia halichondroides Burton, 1932 is the type species of Uritaia Burton, 1932, which is a junior synonym of Hymeniacidon Bowerbank, 1859 (Erpenbeck & Van Soest 2002: 809), making Burton’s (1932) species a junior secondary homonym of Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Thiele, 1898) and required a new name (ICZN Art. 57.3 & 60.3). 3. Summary: Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Thiele, 1898) is the senior secondary homonym of Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Burton, 1932), and the name is maintained (ICZN Art. 57.3). Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Burton, 1932) is the junior secondary homonym of Hymeniacidon halichondroides (Thiele, 1898), in the absence of synonyms requiring a new name (ICZN Art. 60.3), for which Hymeniacidon burtoni nom. nov. was proposed, named after Maurice Burton.
