Taxonomy The species was named by Topsent (1920) when discussing Schmidt's (1880) Chondrocladia concrescens from the Gulf of Mexico. Topsent noted that the identification of Ridley & Dendy (1887: 99, pl. XX fig. 12, pl. XXI fig.7, 12) of a North Pacific abyssal species collected by the Challenger Expedition as C. concrescens did not match Schmidt's species (Ridley & Dendy had doubts themselves by adding a question mark) and he proposed to rename the Challenger material as Chondrocladia challengeri. Curiously, Topsent (1930) discussed C. challengeri again when describing a Japanese Clondrocladia (C. yatsui), but left its status further uncertain by adding no additional concrete evidence. Topsent's decision is probably correct but the species remains unrecognized due to lack of redescription. The name is considered valid, but its status among the described species of Chondrocladia is uncertain. [details]
