Homonymy This combination, described by Desqueyroux-Faúndez from Passe de Boulari, New Caledonia, coordinates 22.35°S 166.4333°E, depth 30 m (holotype MHNG 978/428) is a junior secondary homonym of Euchalina rigida Von Lendenfeld (1887: 817, no illustration) described from Port Jackson, Australia, approximate coordinates 33.85°S 151.25°E (dried holotype BMNH 1886.8.27.471) when it was transferred to genus Callyspongia Duchassaing & Michelotti (1864) by Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994: 100). Callyspongia rigida (Von Lendenfeld, 1887) is currently accepted, but it is here transferred to subgenus Callyspongia (Callyspongia) based on the properties of the type species of Euchalina, i.e. E. typica Von Lendenfeld (1887: 817, pl. XVIII fig. 5, pl. XXVII fig. 24) (cf. Hooper & Wiedenmayer 1994: 88; confirmed in Desqueyroux-Faúndez & Valentine 2002a: 837). E. typica is currently a junior synonym of Callyspongia (Callyspongia) nuda (Ridley, 1884). The present species must be renamed because both homonyms are assigned to the same genus (ICZN art. 59.1). Van Soest (2024: 32) proposed Callyspongia (Cladochalina) desqueyrouxfaundezae nom.nov. named after Ruth Desqueyroux-Faúndez. The subgenus assignment is based on the description and illustrations showing fasciculate primary spicule fibers, characteristic for the subgenus. [details]
