Grammatical gender Genus names ending in -ites would normally be masculine, but the type species Semisuberites arctica indicates that Carter intended the genus name to be feminine (ICZN Art. 30.1.4.4). [details]

Taxonomy Turner et al. (2025: 44-46) sequenced a specimen of the type species S. cribrosa and this resulted in the transfer of the genus and species from Esperiopsidae (cf. Van Soest & Hajdu, 2002) to Halichondriidae, in a clade of mostly Hymeniacidon species.  [details]
