Taxonomy This was erroneously assigned to the subgenus Oxymycale, on the evidence of Vanhöffen (1897) who suggested that his material later assigned to M. thaumatochela by Lundbeck was Mycale (Oxymycale) intermedia with oxea-like megascleres. Lundbeck (1905: 39) had access to Vanhöffen's material and could verify that its megascleres were styles, and that the microsceres conformed to his new species thaumatochela. [details]
