Nomenclature The combination Phoriospongia papillosa (Lamarck, 1815) must be renamed because Lamarck's Alcyonium papillosum was originally preoccupied by Alcyonium papillosum Pallas, 1766, a different species although its identity is not firmly established. Regardless of this, the two are primary homonyms the junior of which has to be renamed (ICZN art. 57.2). The fact that the present combination is referable to the 'var. beta' of Alcyonium papillosum sensu Lamarck makes no difference nomenclaturally. We have to await assignment to a new name before the 'accepted name' can be given. [details]
