Taxonomy De Laubenfels (1948) established Geelongia vasiformis Carter, 1885 as type species of the subgenus Phyllospongia (Antheroplax). Technically this is probably legal, because Lendenfeld named it as one of 9 species and 4 varieties of the subgenus. Nevertheless, this subsequent designation further complicates the already disputable status of Geelongia as a 'forgotten' senior synonym of the large genus Thorecta. It is clearly not a designation representing the Phyllospongia (Antheroplax) characters Lendenfeld names in his definition. [details]
