Publication date Hartman catalogue and Fauchald pink book give 1853 as date for the genus Spiochaetopterus, but this instance appears to be a listing only, and thus a nomen nudum. The genus and type species were not described until 1856 [details]
Taxonomy Webster (1879:246) emended the genus, removing the restriction of Sars to two segments for the mid body, and removing the absence of eyes as a generic character. See also Gitay (1969) [details]
