Description Solitary or subcolonial, conical to cylindrical corallum. Probable pachytheca and pocket budding producing only rudimentary daughter corallites. Cutting calicular edge. External surface of the corallum wrinkled. Radial elements are compact lonsdaleoid septa arranged according to a strong bilateral symmetry marked by a cardinal septum. Other septa are subequal and arranged by pairs in bilateral symmetry. Two zonal endotheca with an outer marginarium made of vesicular dissepiments and an inner endotheca made of tabuloid dissepiments. [details]

Comparison Opisthophyllum was synonymized with Cheilosmilia by Beauvais 1963 but this author changed her view in 1976, considering that a marginarium is constant all along the longitudinal section in Cheilosmilia. Additionally Eliášová 1975 remarked that the size of septa and the elongation of the axial zone is also a criterium to distinguish these genera. [details]

Two zonal endotheca with an outer marginarium made of vesicular dissepiments and an inner endotheca made of tabuloid dissepiments. [details]

Remark With the synonymy of Lingulosmilia and Sclerosmilia, 10 nominal species are counted, probably few are valid. [details]
