The basal Tertiary beds of the upper Chagres River Valley, Panama, which, until now, have been included in the Bohio formation, classed as Oligocene in age, are here named the Tranquilla shale. On the basis of its microfauna, the Tranquilla shale is regarded as Jackson (late Eocene) in age. The fauna consists of 64 species and varieties of Foraminifera, 26 of which are new. Figures of all of the specimens identified are given for comparison. Only the new forms are described.
