Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet trifida is the feminine of the Latin adjective trifidus, meaning 'cleft into three' or 'three-pronged', and presumably refers to the shape of the prostomium of the species, described as being unique among spionids ''in having both a distally pointed prostomium and subdistal lateral prostomial horns'' (Blake & Kudenov, 1978: 195).
