Etymology after Ludwig Schmarda. Day reports that (he thinks) Schmarda had conflated two species in creating Schmarda's Terebella pterochaeta Schmarda [details]
Spelling The spelling in WoRMS was as 'schmardai', but the correct original spelling is as Terebella schmardaei. The Hartman catalogue (1959: 527) correctly had listed the name as Terebella schmardaei. However, in Day's monograph (1967: 748) the name is missreported as T. schmardai. The spelling of 'schmardaei' is unusual but was used by Quatrefages (Heteronereis schmardaei Quatrefages, 1866 ) and by Day (Phyllodoce schmardaei Day, 1963) which the Day 1967 monograph correctly reports still as 'schmardaei'. Thus the 1967 misspelling is an error, not an attempted correction by Day. [details]
