Introduction: "The worms described in the present paper have reached me from several sources; it happens, however, that all the species but three (two from China, one from South Africa) ultimately come from India or Tibet. (1) To Mr. Monm, of the British Museum, I am indebted for the opportunity of examining a small collection of Oligochaeta gathered by the Mt. Everest Expedition of last year; on these I make a few remarks below. From the same institution I have received worms from China, from Bombay and its neighbourhood, and from Pretoria, South Africa. (2) From Dr. Gravely, Superintendent of the Madras Museum, I received a few tubes of freshwater worms. (3) From the Government Entomologist, Coimbatore, South India, I have again received several tubes of worms suspected of attacking plants. As to one of these there can he no doubt-I have in front of me as I write a portion of a plant stem (cardamom) from within which a number of small worms are protruding; these are an indeterminable speaies of Perionyx. In regard to the others there is more doubt; the specimens of Criodrilus apparently contained no vegetable matter in the gut ; but the third species, Malabaria paludicola, has previously been suspected, in another district, (4) From Mr. K. S. Padmanabha Aiyer, of Trivandrum, South India, I received a number of sexual specimens of Aulodrilus trivandranus, recently discovered and described by him ; the interesting features connected with the sexual apparatus of this worm have prompted me to record below a few considerations touching the relationship of the aquatic families Tubificidae and Naididae. (5) Finally I am indebted to Prof. K. N. Bahl, of Lucknow, for the new species of Woodwardiella (= Woodwardia Mich.) described below.
