Pseudodiaptomus forbesi (Copepoda: Calanoida) growth and reproductive rates were examined in response to phytoplankton biomass (as measured by chlorophyll a concentrations) in the northern San Francisco Estuary. A total of 118 copepodite growth rates and 238 egg production rates were measured in 10 years between 2006 and 2018 during late spring–autumn. Pseudodiaptomus forbesi copepodite growth rate averaged 0.21 d-1 and ranged from 0 to 0.53 d-1 , while egg production rate averaged 2.4 eggs ?-1 d-1 and ranged from 0 to 11 eggs ?-1 d-1 among all studies. Specific egg production rate, a measure of growth in adult females, was determined from egg production rate and the ratio of egg carbon content to female-carbon content. Specific egg production rate averaged 0.04 d-1, ranged from 0 to 0.15 d-1, and was almost always lower than copepodite growth rate across the range of chlorophyll concentrations. A hyperbolic model predicted 22% of the variation in growth rate and 7% of the variation in specific egg production rate from chlorophyll concentration. The variability in specific egg production rate to chlorophyll concentration implies that other proxies may better predict reproductive rates, and that nutritional requirements for growth vary among life stages.
