Bruce, A.J. (1993). The occurrence of the semi-terrestrial shrimps Merguia oligodon (De Man 1888) and M. rhizophorae (Rathbun 1900)(Crustacea Decapoda Hippolitidae) in Africa. Tropical Biology 6: 179-187.
The hyppolytid shrimps Merguia oligodon (De Man 1888) and M. rhizophorae (Rathbun 1900) are reported from Kenya and Nigeria respectively, the first occurences of this genus on the African continent. The species have been previously known from Myanmar and Indonesian waters (M. oligodon) and Panama (Atlantic Coast), Suriname and Brazil (M. rhizophorae). The occurences on East and West Africa coasts represent considerable range extensions for both these remarkable shrimps, the only known semi-terrestrial caridean species, and suggest that the distributions may be circumtropical in suitable mangrove habitats.
