Nomenclature The variety was described by Lebwohl from Cape Sunosaki, Sagami Bay, Japan, approximate coordinates 34.9833°N 139.75°E, depth 130 m (whereabouts of type material not currently known). The name of this variety is spelled variously aapta (caption of the description and of Lebwohl’s figs. 63–77) or adapta (explanation and discussion on p. 63 and caption underneath figs. 63-77). Both are Greek and Latin words with different meaning and the explanation given by Lebwohl is ambiguous, so we have to choose. The first name in the text is ‘aapta’ and accordingly (acting as First Revisor, cf. ICZN 24.2.3) Van Soest (2024: 57) took this to be the correct name (see also Ise 2017). As proposed in the Note given under Geodia variospiculosa, the variety is to be merged with the species. [details]
