Morphological and phylogenetic studies of the species of the genus Abathomphalus Bolli, Loeblich & Tappan, 1957, show that these species evolved from Globotruncanella havanensis (Voorwijk). The two previously known Abathomphalus representatives Abathomphalus intermedius (Bolli) and Abathomphalus mayaroensis (Bolli) evolved from a new member of this genus, Abathomphalus salajensis nov. sp., which is the immediate descendant of Globotruncanella havanensis (Voorwijk). The affinity of the above species has also been studied and their evolutionary trend in a section illustrated. The new species Abathomphalus salajensis, its ancestor Globotruncanella havanensis (Voorwijk) its immediate descendant Abathomphalus intermedius (Bolli) and Abathomphalus mayaroensis (Bolli) are described.
