Kytorhynchidarum

204654  (urn:lsid:marinespecies.org:taxname:204654)

unaccepted (This is just a genitive plural of Kytorhynchidae, not the name of a genus. Was used a "Kytorhynchidarum sp" by Schockaert & Martens (1985), just meaning "species of Kytorhynchidae".)

Classification the family Kytorhynchidae and two genera, Kytorhynchella and Kytorhynchus (with two subgenera) were first described from the North Carolina coast (U.S.A.) by RIEGER (1974). A third genus was added to the family by EHLERS & EHLERS (1981), Neokytorhynchus from the Galapagos. Several other representatives have been found on the sandy beaches of the North Sea island Sylt (pers. comm. Dr U. EHLERS). In all these representatives the pharynx is situated in the posterior part of the body, a character which is considered as diagnostic for the family. Moreover, all descriptions were mainly based on sectioned material which is lacking for the species under discussion. Since a sound basis is thereby missing for comparative studies, we prefer not to name the new species, obviously belonging to a new genus. Most probably the family diagnosis will have to be altered in the future as well. [details]
