Taxonomy The name has a complicated history. It was first coined by Graff (1882) as Vortex hallezii for some specimens wrongly identified as Vortex pictus by Hallez (1878) (see notes on Vortex hallezii). Hofsten (1907), with great doubt, puts some specimens he collected in Switzerland in D. hallezi (mind the epithet is spelled wrongly); he expresses his doubts by mentioning "Dalyellia sp. AN hallezi". Later Hofsten (1911) describes a new species based on these specimens: D. brevispina Hofsten, 1911. In 1921, Beklemischev considers the description of Graff too inadequate to allow identification, and considers it a nomen dubium, synonymising it provisionally with the new species D. karisalmica Beklemischev 1921 (p. 648–649 translated: " In 1917, I gave an image of the copulatory organ of this species (Fig. 7), conventionally designated as D. hallezii (Gr.). In the same year, N.V. Nasonov described it as D. karisalmica n. sp. I have now come to the conclusion that Vortex hallezii Gr., due to the insufficiency of Graff's description, cannot really be identified, and therefore the name D. karisalmica Nas remains the species studied here." )
In 1924, Nasonov considers D. brevimana Beklemischev, 1921 a synonym of D. hallezii, a view he continues to express in several papers (see Sources list). Gieysztor (1926) considers D. hallezii insufficiently described, and calls it a nomen nudum, which is impossible, as it is described. He refers to a "nomen dubium" or nomen oblitum", which Gieysztor himself explicitly mentions in a footnote on p. 242 in his article of 1938 (Hiermit korrigiere ich den von mir nicht richtig anngewandten Ausdruck (1926) in Bezug auf M. hallezi: "nomen nudum", der durch den Ausdruck "species dubia" ersetzt werden muss). In 1929 (p. 165) Gieysztor considers all following species as synonyms of D. rossi: D hallezii, D. karisalmica, and D. hallezii var. borealis). In his 1938 article (p. 241) Gieysztor again argues quite intensively to consider the species a "nomen dubium" as it has lead to much confusion with several other species (D. brevimana, D. rossi, D. picta) and explicitely argues against future use of the name, because of the complex and confusing application, and the fact that it was inadequetely described. This view seems to be followed by most authors since then, and the name does not appear in literature anymore. Luther mentions it as synonym of both D. brevimana and D. rossi illustrating the complexity of the taxonomical history.
We follow Gieysztor's suggestion, and consider it as a nomen dubium/oblitum, although Ruebush & Hayes mention it as a species of Microdalyellia. [details]

[details]
