Authority The authority of this name, and many of the species names within Geoplana is complicated. The correct reference/authority of all these taxa certainly is:

Schultze M (1856) Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Landplanarien, nach Mittheilungen des Dr. Fritz Müller in Brasilien und nach eigenen Untersuchungen. Abhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft zu Halle 4: 19–38.

In the course of history several mistakes have been made regarding this reference:

1) Authorship of the reference is often/mostly given as Schultze & Muller. This is plainly wrong, and probably based on the fact that Müller is editor of the volume of the journal during that year and/or by the fact that mentioned Müller is mentioned in the title. However, the front page clearly states "von Dr. Max Schultze " (often WRONGLY put in the title of the reference), which means "by Dr. Max Schultze", indicating Schultze is the only author of the article.

2) The year of publication is often provided as 1857, which is clearly wrong, given the volume number. It is 1856 without any doubt.

Both authorship and year are given correctly by von Graff (1882), who cites the correct reference on p. 22 (reference number 192). The above mistakes are, therefore, from a later date than 1882.

3) The situation becomes even more complicated in 1990, when Ogren & Kawakatsu put forward Stimpson, 1857 as taxonomic authority of the respective names. However, their assessment is based on the assumption that the date of Schultze's publication is 1857, which is wrong as said above. Therefore, Schultze remains the primary authority.
