Authority The authority of this name, and many of the species names within Geoplana is complicated. The correct reference of all these taxa certainly is:

Schultze M (1856) Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Landplanarien, nach Mittheilungen des Dr. Fritz Müller in Brasilien und nach eigenen Untersuchungen. Abhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft zu Halle 4: 19–38.

1) Authorship of the reference is often/mostly given as Schultze & Muller. This is plainly wrong, and probably based on the fact that Müller is editor of the volume of the journal during that year and/or by the fact that Müller is mentioned in the title. However, the front page clearly states "von Dr. Max Schultze " (often WRONGLY put in the title of the reference), which means "by Dr. Max Schultze", indicating Schultze is the only author of the article.

2) The year of publication is often cited as 1857, which is clearly wrong, given the volume number. It is 1856 without any doubt. This mistake might stem from the fact that an English translation of Schultze's (1856) article was published in "The Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Second Series) 115" in 1857. The latter is, however, not the original publication.

Both authorship and year are given correctly by von Graff (1882), who cites the correct reference on p. 22 (reference number 192). The above mistakes are, therefore, from a later date than 1882.

3) However, all names introduced on p.22–27, including Geoplana, should be attributed to Müller. They come from letters sent by Müller to Schultze, and Schultze is quite explicit that the descriptions are basically from Müller: " Die mir in verschiedenen Briefen zugegangenen Mittheilungen F. Müller's über die brasilianischen Landplanarien stelle ich in Folgendem zusammen:" The pages that follow (22–27) are in between quotation marks, indicating they are to be attributed to Müller, not Schultze.

4) The situation becomes even more complicated in 1990, when Ogren & Kawakatsu put forward Stimpson, 1857 as taxonomic authority of the name Geoplana. However, their assessment is based on the assumption that the date of Schultze's publication is 1857, the same year as Stimpson’s, which is wrong as said above. Therefore, Schultze (1856) remains the primary author, Müller (1856) the authority of the new names on p. 22–27. [details]
