Taxonomy The taxonomical history of this species is a complicated one. The first specimens were mentioned by Hallez, but wrongly identified by him as Vortex pictus Schmidt, 1848. This was recognised by Graff (1882), who described a new species for Hallez's animals: Vortex hallezii Graff, 1882. Vejodovsky (1895) doubts this decision. Later, Hallez (1890) confirms that Graff is right. A bit confusingly, Hallez always mentions Vortex picta Hallez, 1879 as a synonym of V. hallezii [e.g. Hallez, 1894: p. 94]. In some cases this was interpreted that V. hallezii was a synonym of V. pictus, which is not the case. Hallez just indicates in this manner that the species was misidentified by him in 1879 as V. pictus Schmidt, 1848. [details]
