Status Mortensen (1943, p. 217-222) considered H. purpurascens as subjective junior synonym of H. inflatus. Rowe in Rowe & Gates (1995: p. 249-250) recognise H. purpurascens as distinct species based principally on a stouter test, larger, crowded tubercles and thicker coarser spines in comparison to H. inflatus.
